History

Followfocus has been shooting since the age of ten, when he purchased a Kodak 110 cartridge film camera from Eckerd's drugstore. Originally from Texas, his family often vacationed in Colorado every year. The family would often drive from Texas to Colorado in the family car. It was on these long roadtrips where Followfocus became aware of old architecture, landscape photography, and the effects of urban sprawl and development and how it is ruining the environment.

Artist's Vision

Each year that my family and I went on vacation, I noticed drastic changes in the environment. An old farm over here becomes a shopping mall, a beautiful lake over there is now a Wal-Mart parking lot. Each time we took a trip West, I would notice something else along the way that was being destroyed, or had vanished altogether. I have always loved the ghost towns, old houses, ancient barns, and farms I would see along the way, but they were quickly getting bulldozed to make room for more development. Most of the buildings built now are built with cheap materials. Materials that are so cheap, only after a few years, deterioration has already begun, but it doesn’t appear to matter in today’s society. Soon, these new buildings will be torn down to make way for newer buildings. But at what cost to the environment? Its amazing how some of the old buildings and houses have lasted for so long. This should be an indication to our society, who I like to refer to as "the disposable generation", about how building something to last really is better for the environment in the long run. We live in such a disposable society: constantly rebuilding and throwing away. We do this in almost every facet of our lives as we have succumbed to the effects of consumerism. More land is bulldozed to make way for new houses and strip malls. Trees are cut down, rivers and streams are rerouted, lakes are filled in, surface water, groundwater, air quality, landscape aesthetics, and wildlife habitats are destroyed in the process, all in the name of expansion, urban sprawl and greed."
