A county is a political unit of land, larger than a township, smaller than a state. In the United States, there are 3,141 counties or county-equivalent administrative units (such as Alaska's boroughs) in total.

There are 62 counties per state, on average. The state with the fewest counties is Delaware (3), and the state with the most is Texas (254).
