As a tennis player at Stanford, he won the NCAA singles title in 1986, and was part of two NCAA championship teams (1982 and 1986). As a professional tennis player, he was ranked as high as 27th in the world in singles, won four professional titles (two in singles and two in doubles) and reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1989.
