PCN was founded by Daniel Drolet and David Strumpf in 2004, who at the time were system administrators for legacy networks.

PCN went through an investment round and raised $5.25 million.<ref name="Reference 2" /> Joe Kasputysl and Jerre Stead, PCN directors along with Irwin Pfister, Executive Chairman of the board were head of the financing round.<ref name="Reference 2" /> Philadelphia venture capital group Enertech Capital was also involved.<ref name="Reference 2" />

In 2007, PCN was awarded "The Most Outstanding Smart Grid Venture" at the "Austin Clean Energy Venture Summit."<ref name="Reference 4" /> San Diego Business Journal listed PCN as an innovation finalist in 2013 for its contributions to the "Smart Grid".<ref name="Reference 5" />
