Early in his career he acted as defense counsel in a number of cases which received media attention. In 1997 he represented Robert Charles Gordon, whose son died when Gordon slapped the boy in the chest. In 2009, when Salvadoran national Ingmar Guandique was implicated as the possible murderer of intern Chandra Levy in 2001, Benowitz analyzed the quality of the evidence against the suspect.<ref name=wibw />
