Victoria Taylor is a digital marketer and public relations manager who worked for ID public relations[1] and was the former director of communications for Reddit, known for assisting the community moderators in hosting interviews with guests to the website.[2][3]

Born in Milwaukee, she graduated from Marquette University[4] and worked for Los Angeles entertainment PR company ID public relations in strategic social media marketing and digital PR for entertainment celebrities, corporate clients, and brands. Her Wikipedia User account, AnnBLea, would frequently create or edit articles about clients of ID PR. She moved to New York City to join Reddit in June 2013,[5][6] using her contacts in the entertainment industry to get celebrities to answer questions from users, facilitating interviews with celebrities in various ways, including by sometimes typing out responses from interviewees as they spoke.[7] She described Reddit as an "ocean" where much of the original work on the internet is created before going to other sites.[1][8]

In 2014, Reddit had 5.5 billion page views a month, more than CNN, BBC and ESPN - with the average user spending 20 minutes on the site three times a day.[9] In 2012 The Atlantic was banned from the "news" section of the site, along with the Huffington Post,[10] Vice, RT[11] and Salon due to the sites voting up their own editorial pieces, in a section dedicated to hard news.[12] Taylor encouraged journalists to use Reddit in a transparent fashion, giving attribution to original ideas and to respect that "reddit’s communities belong to their members."[3][9][13][14][15] She advised the media to seek permission before copying other people's contributions, and seek "guidance for proper attribution."[16][17]

Taylor described Reddit as like a cocktail party where advertisers should build rapport with individuals, saying "you wouldn’t walk around a cocktail party handing out business cards to everyone without engaging in a conversation and connecting with them personally first."[18][19][20][21] While a large number of Chief Marketing Officers want to "infiltrate the reddit community on behalf of their brand," Taylor emphasized that "self-promotion is frowned upon" and the site is "100 percent organic."[18] She recommended that advertisers design promotions that "spark conversations and feedback."[22] Taylor recommended that businesses use AMAs to get attention for public figures, but cautioned “It is important to approach AMAs carefully and be aware that this may not be a fit for every project or client.”[23] Lauren Orsini writes in ReadWrite that "Reddit's huge community is the perfect hype machine for promoting a new movie, a product release, or a lagging political campaign" but "very specific set of etiquette. Redditors don’t want to advertise for you, they want to talk to you."[24] She argues that “It’s not that Redditors hate brands, It’s that they hate feeling manipulated by brands” and that they "like content that begs for intelligent viewers and participants."[25]

Taylor stated that because users of the site are "so privacy-conscious" and use tools like AdBlock and proxies "try very hard to go above and beyond... explaining how our ads work and how they target people."[26]

Taylor has promoted the science subreddit[27][28] and defended the right of its moderators to make their own editorial policies, which include banning submissions on climate change denialism.[29]

Taylor was dismissed as an employee on Thursday 2 July 2015.[30] In response to her dismissal, many of the volunteer moderators of reddit shut down access to many of the website's most popular forums and services in protest.[31][32][33][34][35] There was speculation that she was dismissed as a consequence of a celebrity guest Jesse Jackson being provoked by community questions during an interview.[36]
