Admiral Michael "Mike" Mullen is the 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking officer in the United States, and President Obama's principal military adviser. He is retiring as CJCS effective at the end of September 2011, and will be replaced by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey. Admiral Mullen is a native of Los Angeles; his mother worked as an assistant for Jimmy Durante and his father was a Hollywood press agent whose clients included Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart and Carol Burnett. His military career began when he secured a basketball scholarship at the U.S. Naval Academy. He went on to serve a wide range of assignments at sea and ashore, including service in the Vietnam War, and was recognized by his peers in 1987 with the Vice Admiral Stockdale Award for leadership. As Commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples, Admiral Mullen had operational responsibility for NATO missions in the Balkans, Iraq and the Mediterranean. As Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe, he was responsible for providing overall command, operational control and coordination of forces in the U.S. European Command area of responsibility. He assumed these duties in 2004, and was relieved of them in 2007 upon becoming Chief of Naval Operations. The many decorations he's received during his career include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal , the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
