Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a practicing neurosurgeon, a member of the medical faculty at Emory University and the chief medical correspondent for CNN. Since joining the cable news network in 2001, Gupta has contributed reporting to many CNN shows and websites, including his own show "Sanjay Gupta, MD," "Anderson Cooper 360," special features and documentaries and CNN.com. Born outside Detroit, Gupta received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. His reporting often takes him overseas, to war zones and to areas recovering from natural disasters. In 2003, while filing reports from U.S. field hospitals during the invasion of Iraq, Gupta performed emergency brain surgery on an injured Iraqi boy. His 2006 reports from post-Katrina New Orleans won an Emmy for "Outstanding Feature Story" in a newscast, and in 2011 he traveled to Japan to report on the aftermath of the March tsunami. In 2009 President Barack Obama offered Gupta the position of Surgeon General of the United States; Gupta declined, saying he would not give up his medical practice nor sacrifice time with his family (Gupta has three daughters with his wife, attorney Rebecca Olson). CNN premiered his 9/11 anniversary special, "Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports: Terror in the Dust," in September 2011. The feature examined the medical challenges faced by first responders at the World Trade Center site.
