(NewsUSA) - Want to save money and conserve water? A good place to start is the bathroom.

Households use an average of 107,000 gallons of water a year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. But installing water-efficient toilets alone will translate into a savings of 14,000 to17,000 gallons per year for a family of four, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Given the statistics, manufacturers like Kohler Co. are creating high-performance toilets and other products like showerheads and touchless faucets that use less water and save money for the consumer.

Kohler's Cimarron Comfort Height Toilet, for example, has a powerful flush but also offers water savings of up to 3,200 gallons per year over standard models. Its flapperless flush tower design prevents toilet "run-ons" better than traditional flappers, thus avoiding water waste.

For shower-takers, Kohler's MasterShower Eco showerhead and handshower are more ecological without sacrificing the quality of water coverage or temperature control.

In order to overcome the challenges of low water pressure and temperature fluctuation, which typically hamper the performance of low-flow showerheads, Kohler has installed a special valve that provides and maintains a comfortable temperature at flow rates as low as 2 gallons per minute, compared with the industry standard of 2.5 gallons per minute. These showerheads reduce water consumption by up to 20 percent.

For its commercial customers, Kohler also offers waterless urinals, which have the potential to save up to 40,000 gallons of water per fixture annually.
