Ockham published several philosophical works before he was summoned to the Papal Court in 1323 on charges of heresy. The first was his ''Commentary'' on the Sentences of Peter Lombard, a standard requirement for medieval theology students, who would comment on this famous book of opinions (''sententia'') on certain controversial or difficult theological statements.
