Mark Adams is a contributing editor at National Geographic Adventure. His work has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Fortune, Outside and New York Magazine, where he wrote the "It Happened Last Week" column. His first book, "Mr. America: How Muscular Millionaire Bernarr Macfadden Transformed the Nation Through Sex, Salad, and the Ultimate Starvation Diet," was published in 2009. He followed up with "Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time" (2011), the true account of explorer Hiram Bingham III, who revealed the existence of Machu Picchu to the Western world and was subsequently accused of stealing artifacts from the site. Adams, who hiked the Andes in pursuit of this story, lives in New York with his wife and three children.
