Greg, if you want to add listings to TFA, by all means feel free. All I do is add a future date(s) to the [[Centiare:Today's featured article/March 2007|monthly archive]], copy an existing TFA with all the formatting, and then copy/edit in the new TFA. As I noted, it seems like an image at 130px + 10 lines in the raw edit box (or 8 formatted) + 1 line break is needed to get a proper fit on the front page.
