The Wikimedia Foundation prohibits publishing logs of most of their IRC channels, except for a very few that are published by the Foundation including "Office Hours" IRC logs. The owner of Wikipedialogs.com feels that this is contrary to Wikimedia Foundations stated principles of transparency and openness, and set up the site to fulfill those principles by publishing these logs.

Wikipedia Foundation executive director Sue Gardner [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Sue_Gardner&diff=566302927&oldid=566269021 has said that IRC is an "ephemeral medium"], implying they should not be logged, while referring to some of [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours/Office_hours_2011-05-26 her own sexual comments on IRC] as "an informal, jokey exchange".

The site is no longer up, but the site's owner has been learning to manage a website, and is soliciting custom software that would allow multiple logbots to operate, thus bypassing bans handed down when individual logbots are exposed by material contained within the logs. The domain name currently points to the owner's personal site, and the owner states that he intends to re-open the site, and is currently collecting logs from Wikimedia Foundation IRC channels.

In 2011, Wikipedia banned a longtime contributor who happened to be affiliated with the GNAA. This contributor had been collecting IRC logs over his several years of contributing to Wikipedia, and he published these to Gnaa.eu in 2011, shortly after his ban from Wikipedia. Many Wikipedians were exposed as using abusive and misogynistic language, which proved embarrassing to them after they had progressed in the ranks of the Wikimedia Foundation and its chapters. The user's affiliation with the GNAA proved a convenient excuse to deny the validity of the logs, but certain Wikipedians have tacitly admitted to the accuracy of the logs by [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jimbo_Wales&diff=prev&oldid=566824375 apologizing for things they said on IRC], and [[User:Badmachine/wikipedia-en-2011-11-24|which were accurately represented]] by the logs. After the GNAA stopped publishing the logs, Wikipedialogs.com was set up to take over this vital service.
