Ebbesen teaches classics and medieval philology and philosophyat the Department of Greek and Latin at the SAXO Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.Director of the Institute for Greek and Latin 1992-99. Previously (1982-86 and 1989-91) director of the Institute of Greek and Latin Medieval Philology, which in 1992 was fused with the Institute of Classics to form the present institute.

Editorial adviser for Medieval Philosophy and Theology and Didascalia. Member of Société Internationale pour l'étude de la Philosophie Médiévale (since 1992 member of the board, chairman of the trivium commission since 1982); of Platonselskabet, Det danske Sprog- og Litteraturselskab, Society for Medieval & Renaissance Philosophy, Dansk Selskab for Oldtids- og Middelalderforskning (president 1990-93), The Buridan Society (secretary since 1986). Fellow of Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab (= The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters) since 1989; member of the Academy's commission on research policies since 1989-99.
