Unlike other towns developed along the National Road, Cambridge City had the added advantage of straddling the Whitewater Canal. The canal failed to live up to its promise, but the National Road brought a steady stream of westbound wagons through Cambridge City, founded virtually overnight in 1836.

HUDDLESTON FARMHOUSE INN MUSEUM, 1 mi. w. of SR 1 on US 40, comprises a restored farmhouse, barn, smokehouse. and springhouse. The three-story Federal-style farmhouse, constructed by a farming family 1839-41, accommodated many travelers along the National Road. It has been refurnished in period. Allow 30 minutes minimum.
