New Century Financial provides subprime mortgage loans mainly for single-family homes. The company's wholesale division (nearly 90% of sales) originates and purchases loans through a network of 35,000 independent mortgage brokers, while its retail division markets loans directly to individuals via more than 200 offices in 35 states. New Century sells many of its mortgages in pools of loans to institutional buyers. Amid a wave a loan defaults by its customers, New Century has ceased making new loans and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
