In this editors opinion Korčula was originally a late Roman town. It became a dual Latin Roman/Slavic town in the middle ages. With the arrival of Venetians in the 15th century it continued to evolve as such until the end of the Republic itself in 1797. In the 19th century the island became heavily influenced by  Pan-Slavism and the Croatian Nationalistic movement. Pan-Slavism was later in the 20th century reinforced by the Yugoslavia governments. This had a strong influence on the cultural development however today we still have surnames on the island that are not of Slavic origin, for example:
