TaxCloud is a U.S.-based software-as-a-service provider of sales and use tax compliance tools. Its customers include online retailers, SaaS companies and other businesses that sell into more than one state. The platform works out the sales tax due at checkout and monitors economic nexus thresholds. It also registers sellers with state tax agencies, and it prepares, files and pays their sales tax returns.[1] The business is run by The Federal Tax Authority, LLC, known as FedTax, which trades under the TaxCloud name.[1][2]
The company holds Certified Service Provider (CSP) status under the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, a designation shared by only a handful of firms. That status lets TaxCloud provide filing services free of charge to qualifying sellers in states that belong to the Streamlined program.[2]
History
Beginnings
The company was established in 2008 as FedTax and later became known as TaxCloud.[3] Co-founder David Campbell held the chief executive role. He had earlier started two data-storage businesses, Deep9 and Punch Networks.[4]
TaxCloud was first marketed to retailers as a no-cost compliance service, with most of its expenses paid by the states taking part in the Streamlined Sales Tax program.[5] It went on to serve more than 24,000 retailers. The service could be used through e-commerce platforms and marketplaces such as Amazon, Etsy and Shopify.[5]
Remote-sales tax policy
FedTax took part in the national debate over whether sales tax should be collected on internet and other remote sales. In February 2012, Campbell signed a coalition letter as FedTax's CEO. The letter asked the U.S. Senate Finance Committee to back the Marketplace Fairness Act.[6] The Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing on the bill on August 1, 2012. Its record includes a written statement from Campbell and Joan Wagnon, who was then executive vice president of The Federal Tax Authority.[7]
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. in 2018 that states could make out-of-state sellers collect sales tax. After the ruling, TaxCloud, then based in Norwalk, Connecticut, ran its first national advertising campaign. The campaign was called "Gimme Tax Cloud" and appeared on Sirius XM and digital channels.[8]
2023 funding and new management
TaxCloud announced on April 17, 2023, that it had raised $20 million in growth equity. The round was led by Camber Partners, a New York growth equity firm making its first investment in e-commerce sales tax.[9][10] According to the company, the money was meant to grow its product line along with its marketing and sales teams.[10] EcommerceBytes reported that the deal brought TaxCloud both a new owner and a new chief executive.[11]
Nate Gilmore became CEO as part of the transaction.[9] His earlier roles included head of marketing at the logistics firm Shipwire and chief revenue officer and chief marketing officer at PandaDoc.[11] By 2026, TaxCloud's website named Joe Stanton as chief executive, with Gilmore serving as chairman and chief strategy officer.[3]
Services
The TaxCloud platform covers these areas:[1][2]
| Function | What it does |
|---|---|
| Tax calculation | Computes rates in real time for more than 13,000 U.S. taxing jurisdictions and updates them automatically |
| Returns and payment | Prepares, files and remits sales tax returns in every state |
| Nexus monitoring | Compares a seller's sales with each state's economic nexus limits and sends alerts when one is crossed |
| Registration | Obtains sales tax permits in states where the seller has nexus |
| Taxability codes | Sorts products according to how they are taxed |
| Exemption certificates | Gathers and stores certificates from tax-exempt customers |
| Audit help | Helps sellers assemble records during a state sales tax audit |
Free filing through the Streamlined program
The Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board has approved TaxCloud as a Certified Service Provider. In that role it offers qualifying sellers registration, return preparation, filing, payment and exemption certificate handling in Streamlined member states without charge.[2][12] TaxCloud advertises this as free filing in 24 states.[1] Its contracts with the Governing Board make it the agent of sellers who sign up through the program, and member states may cover the cost of its services.[13]
Platform connections
Ready-made connectors are available for e-commerce, billing and accounting systems. These include Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento, Odoo, QuickBooks, Stripe and Chargebee. Developers can also use TaxCloud's API.[1][2]
Plans
TaxCloud is sold on a tiered subscription basis, and every plan comes with a 30-day free trial.[2] ERP Research, an independent software directory, says the company targets mid-sized businesses. The directory adds that it concentrates on U.S. sales and use tax and does not cover international value-added tax or e-invoicing.[14]
