History
The company was founded in 1938 by Stanley Kaplan, who at age 14 began tutoring students in the basement of his parents' Brooklyn home.[2] When his applications to medical schools were denied due to anti-Semitic admissions policies of the day, he turned his full attention to tutoring students for the New York State Regents exam, as he recognized that scoring well on the exam gave students from working- and middle-class families the opportunity to get into college. This formed his belief in standardized tests as a way to level the playing field and give first generation students a chance to compete against their wealthy peers. As other standardized admissions tests were introduced, beginning with the SAT for college then the GRE, LSAT, MCAT and GMAT for graduate, law, medical and business school, Stanley Kaplan's business grew.
In the 1970s, Kaplan's business expanded into various locations across the U.S., and in 1984, the company was acquired by The Washington Post Company, which today is the Graham Holdings Company. Beginning in the 1990s, Kaplan began to expand both geographically – opening licensee centers around the world – as well as into other programs, beyond exam prep into other educational services, including English languages, higher education and online education, launching the first wholly online law school, Concord Law School, in 1998.

Philanthropy
The Kaplan Educational Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity initially established in 2006 and supported by an endowment funded by Kaplan, Inc. executives to help underrepresented, overlooked, low-income community college students transfer to top four-year universities. Kaplan, Inc. and its employees continue to provide financial, in-kind and volunteer support to KEF and its scholars. Eighty-seven percent of KEF scholars earn a bachelor's degree. Scholars have attended elite schools and have secured post-graduation employment with Fortune 500 companies.
