Fort Zachary Taylor State Historic Site, at the southwest end of the island via Southard Street past the Truman Annex, was built 1845-66 as part of Florida's coastal defense system. The cannons within the walls constitute one of the largest collections of Civil War armaments. Swimming, fishing and picnicking on a tropical beach are among the recreational activities available.
