Bok Tower Gardens, 3 miles north off CR 17A (Burns Avenue) is surrounded by 200 acres of landscaped gardens, much of which was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. The marble and beautiful coquina stone tower houses 60 bronze bells weighing from 17 pounds to more than 11 tons. Carillon recitals are given daily at 3 (some days a recorded recital); selections are played every 30 minutes daily beginning at 10. Special recitals are announced in advance. The bells are best heard at a distance of about 200 yards. The tower and gardens were dedicated to the American people by founder Edward Bok, a Dutch immigrant. A self-guiding tour leads visitors through walkways graced by thousands of native and exotic plants. Swans and ducks can be seen in the Reflection Pool, while foxes, raccoons, bobcats and many rare plant species abound in The Pine Ridge Nature Reserve. The reserve includes Window by the Pond, a nature observatory. An audiovisual tour of the garden and tower is presented in the theater at the Education and Visitor Center; the center also houses art exhibits and exhibits about Bok, the tower, carillon and an endangered species program. Guided nature walks depart from the visitor center daily. Picnic facilities and food are available. Gardens open daily 8-6. Last admission 1 hour before closing. Visitor center open daily 9-5.
