The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, 3075 Sanibel-Captiva Road, features a large collection of seashells from around the world. The collection includes locally found shells, land snail shells and shells that one were used as money. Also included are works of art created using shells such as ceremonial masks, mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture pieces, religious objects and jewelry.

A learning lab features hands-on play areas for children and a simulated saltwater environment with indigenous shellfish and snails. A slide presentation is shown. Allow 1 hour minimum. Open Tuesday through Sunday 10-4; closed major holidays. Phone 941.395.2233.
