Facebook Transmitted Disease (FTD)

- Utilizing the infrastructure of Facebook's social networking site, hackers and malmakers, makers of malware, have exploited the curiosity of Facebook users through virus-like links that perpetuate themselves among one's friends via a cleverly worded Facebook message that is automatically sent upon infection. [1]
These messeges are often worded in the way that an infected user, or diseased user, is notifying an uninfected friend of his or her capturing of a photo. Then the email provides a 'link' to said photograph. Upon clicking the 'link', the uninfected friend is then contaminated with an FTD where he or she repeats the process of sending rogue emails to all his or her friends. These links are often unrecognizable and contain words like: photo, crazy, party, vid, video, movie, amazing, cool, and film. These words lead the uninfected user to believe it is a legitimate link, thus justifying the clicking of it. Facebook Transmitted Diseases are a rapidly growing problem, however they can be tamed through safe browsing tactics and proper virus protection.
