The company began as wood, fur and gold traders on the St. Lawrence river, evolving into a dedicated marine carrier in 1870. The Asian component was added by Stanley Leung, a scion of the renowned Leung Maritime Group, previously traded on the Hang Seng (the Hong Kong stock exchange).
