Palaeooölogy, also palaeoology or paleoology, is the branch of oology focusing on the study of ancient eggs. Palaeooölogy has developed since 1868, when Wilhelm von Nathusius described the first microstructures from modern eggshells. It has become a part of many disciplines and areas of study, such as environmental and conservational issues, paleobiodiversity, biomineralisation, poultry science, and systematics.

Since in the last two decades dinosaur eggs have been found on all continents except Antarctica, several groups of scientists have begun working in this area.[1] Palaeooölogy is of particular interest for the study on the origin of birds.[2]

Advances in palaeooölogy are sparse, however, and remain disseminated across specialised areas of research. As a result, many discoveries which would complement each other remain disconnected.
