An internet dating service is a web based communication system that allows singles to connect in the hopes of making a friendship, romantic relationship or for a sexual encounter. Most of this communication is either done through a personal computer or through a cell phone.

Internet dating services for the most part have remained the same over the years in how they work. You build a profile page, upload a photo and then start searching for other members. There have been some changes in this process as some sites have added video, instant messaging and forums to their sites. Over the years there has been some criticism about how real some profiles are fake and some sites have been penalized for creating these fake profiles to bait the public to join. With the emergence of free internet dating services there are also scammers that join these sites to try and get money from other member, this is similar to the scam/spam email that we have all received over the years. These are things that all visitors of internet dating services need to be aware of.

Of course social networking has had its part as some people are finding their soul mates through sites like Facebook and Myspace.

Internet dating services traffic is expected to grow more in the future as more of us gain access to the internet. Wired magazine said in 2003 that not using internet dating services in the future to find a date will be unthinkable.
