However, when combined with hydrogen or oxygen (as in ''hydrogen sulfide'' or ''sulfur dioxide''), we observe the "rotten [[egg]]" smell that is associated with sulfur.

Sulfur is sometimes spelled ''sulphur''. It occurs in many sulphide and sulphate minerals.
