According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of 5.0 [[square kilometer|km&sup2;]] (1.9 [[square mile|mi&sup2;]]).  4.5 km&sup2; (1.7 mi&sup2;) of it is land and 0.5 km&sup2; (0.2 mi&sup2;) of it is water.  The total area is 10.82% water.

As of the [[census]] of [[2000]], there are 2,360 people, 1,045 households, and 619 families residing in the town.  The [[population density]] is 526.7/km&sup2; (1,367.9/mi&sup2;).  There are 1,153 housing units at an average density of 257.3/km&sup2; (668.3/mi&sup2;).  The racial makeup of the town is 73.64% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 19.41% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.76% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 3.31% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.00% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.61% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races.  3.09% of the population are [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There are 1,045 households out of which 23.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% are married couples living together, 13.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% are non-families. 36.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.  The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.77.
