Claiborne Pell is the namesake of the Pell Grant, a college tuition grant program in the United States. Thanks to Pell, college students who are in financial need may apply for assistance up to about $5,700 per academic year, via the Pell Grant.

Pell died at his Newport home just after midnight on the first day of 2009.
