[[Wikipedia]] co-founder '''Jimmy "Jimbo" Wales has often been criticized''' for his sometimes authoritarian, sometimes unaccountable, and sometimes inept style in his direction of the online encyclopedia community and for his mismanagement of the [[Directory:Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia Foundation]] that is responsible for running it.

As a [[Directory:The New York Times|New York Times]] writer commented in a column once:
:''"As long as he is involved with Wikipedia, however, Mr. Wales will continue to be a guiding light for its many contributors — as well as a lightning rod for its critics."'' <ref>[http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/17/technology/17wikipedia.html?_r=1&bl&ex=1205899200&en=e0949ec94f152e85&ei=5087%0A&oref=slogin "Open-Source Troubles in Wiki World" by Noam Cohen. ==Not a pornographer?==
[[Image:Captain_Jimbo.jpg|right|thumb|200px|Seems an odd way to market a "web portal"]]Jimbo Wales made repeated edits to his own biography on Wikipedia. One particularly hard bone of contention was [[Directory:Bomis|Bomis]], Jimbo's thriving Internet venture prior to Wikipedia. Bomis, a search portal, also included a healthy dose of "adult content", which Jimbo previously downplayed as ''glamour photography'' -- though as [[Directory:The New Yorker|The New Yorker]] notes, "glamour photography" is ''"not the most precise way to describe lesbian strip-poker threesomes."'' Nonetheless, Jimbo has been steadfast in his efforts to [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jimmy_Wales&diff=26702273&oldid=26658959 remove any suggestion that the beacon of free culture was at one time an unapologetic pornography peddler].

=="Sole Founder" controversy with Larry Sanger==
While the Wikipedia project consistently released statements to the press in its earliest years describing Larry Sanger as the "co-founder" of the encyclopedia, Jimmy Wales later took it upon himself to reframe the description of Sanger as an "employee" of Wales'. Wales has stated that he appreciates Sanger's contributions, but he seems unwilling to accept Sanger as a pioneer of Wikipedia's construction.

Dr. Sanger has [http://www.larrysanger.org/roleinwp.html taken the time] to elaborate on the factual evidence that supports his identification as "co-founder" of Wikipedia. Jimmy Wales has done very little such work to compile evidence that he is the "sole founder".<ref>[http://www.larrysanger.org/roleinwp.html My role in Wikipedia (links)], Dr. Larry Sanger, 2007, ''LarrySanger.org''.</ref>

More recently, Sanger has called out Wales via an "open letter",<ref>[http://blog.citizendium.org/2009/04/08/an-open-letter-to-jimmy-wales-copy/ An open letter to Jimmy Wales], Dr. Larry Sanger, 2009, ''Citizendium.org''.</ref> where the displeased creator of the Wikipedia name and architecture accuses Wales of "lies and distortions", being "transparently self-serving", and issuing "particularly outrageous" claims.

==Flip-flopping on paid editing of Wikipedia==
In August 2006, Wales [http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2006-August/051897.html crafted a compromise] with a paid-editing firm to create and serve GFDL content on their own website about paying entities not currently featured in Wikipedia. Other unpaid, independent editors could determine whether the material was worth scraping into Wikipedia.

However, just a couple of months later in October 2006, Wales would renege on this agreement and, in fact, chastised anyone in the public relations industry as "[http://blog.bitepr.com/2006/08/jimmy_wales_on_.html deeply unethical]" if they attempt to create or influence GFDL content of an encyclopedic nature. Of course, the GFDL specifically bars licensees from restricting content to either commercial or non-commercial parties, so Wales really had no clue here.

==Essjay scandal==
[[Image:Jimmy Wales shilling wristwatches.jpg|left|thumb|170px|Want to buy a watch?]]In January 2007, Wales hired Ryan Jordan (pseudonymously known as "Essjay" on Wikipedia) to work at Wikia, Inc. At that time, it is [http://blog.citizendium.org/2007/03/05/one-last-brief-comment-on-the-essjay-scandal/ known that Wikia's co-founders knew] that Jordan was not academically credentialed as a Theology professor holding a PhD, as described on his Wikipedia user page. In fact, he was a 24-year-old college dropout. Regardless of this fraud, later in February, Wales appointed Essjay to Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee, the highest authority on Wikipedia short of the Wikimedia Foundation's own board of directors and staff. When the ''[http://www.WikipediaReview.com Wikipedia Review]'' engaged the ''New Yorker'' magazine to expose Essjay's fraud, Wales' first reaction [http://news.google.com/archivesearch?q=%22I+don%27t+really+have+a+problem+with+it%22+Essjay&btnG=Search&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8 was to say] he "didn't really have a problem with it".

{{GKAdBrite}}

Well after [[Wikipedia_scandals#Essjay_is_not_a_professor|the scandal]] evolved into a serious public relations threat to Wikipedia's credibility, Wales sought to deflect responsibility for the whole affair by blaming the Arbitration Committee that he himself had created: "EssJay was appointed at the request of and unanimous support of the ArbCom." - Jimmy Wales [http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2007-October/083549.html 17 October 2007]. Perplexed members of the Arbitration Committee responded by saying it would be more accurate to describe their "unanimous support" as "nobody objected to Jimbo's nomination of Essjay".

==Spyware? What spyware?==
[[Image:Jimmy_Wales_bright_eyed.jpg|left|thumb|200px|Me? Support spyware?]]Jimbo must have some fond connection with a piece of hated software called BonziBUDDY, because Jimbo has no problem stepping in personally on this Wikipedia subject. Those Internet veterans among you may remember BonziBUDDY, that obnoxious purple gorilla whose friendly and helpful appearance just happened to hide a program designed to infest your computer with truckloads of adware and malware. The mainstream media was virtually unanimous in scorning BonziBUDDY on various "most hated" lists. Jimbo, however, had a curiously different opinion; in fact, he couldn't keep this opinion to himself, so he [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=BonziBUDDY&diff=168350569&oldid=168303939 personally edited Wikipedia's BonziBUDDY article] to systematically erase mention of "spyware" from the article. In fact, Jimbo also violated the Wikipedia rule against "original research" by becoming an expert paralegal for a moment: ''"In the following legal settlement, the issue was not the issue of "spyware", a term which does not appear in any of the legal documents."''

==Rachel Marsden affair==
His alleged attempts to "clean up" a Wikipedia entry for a woman with whom he had a relationship has also [http://news.google.com/archivesearch?q=%22Rachel+Marsden%22+Wales&btnG=Search&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8 generated headlines]. Wales was accused of intervening to sanitize the Wikipedia article of a news commentator with whom he was having a romantic online relationship, which was about to culminate in a sexual romp in a [[Directory:Hilton_Hotels/Doubletree/Washington_DC|Doubletree Hotel in the nation's capital]].

The Wikipedia article regarding controversial [[Directory:Canada|Canadian]] radio commentator [[Directory:Rachel Marsden|Rachel Marsden]] had been the subject of controversy on Wikipedia for some years. According to Marsden, she had asked [[Directory:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]] to delete her [[biography]]. Her concerns led her to contact Wikipedia co-founder [[Directory:Jimmy Wales|Jimmy Wales]], claiming that it was incorrect and libelous. Wales reviewed her biography and, deeming that it was not up to standard, helped to clean up the entry by quietly requesting that a closely allied administrator [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rachel_Marsden&diff=189784135&oldid=185926385 do the work], literally hours before Wales would meet Marsden in person at the hotel.

Wales announced in a statement on Wikipedia "My involvement in cases like this is completely routine, and I am proud of it."<ref name=smh/> On [[February 29]], [[2008]], the technology gossip blog [[Valleywag]] claimed that they had entered into a relationship, and published instant messaging chats that they had allegedly exchanged. On the following day Wales announced on his Wikipedia user page that he was no longer involved with Marsden. In return, Marsden, who claimed to have learned about the breakup by reading about it on the Internet, turned to [[eBay]] and put up for auction a [[t-shirt]] and sweater that she claimed to be Wales'.<ref>{{cite news
There is curiously only a brief mention of this episode in the anonymous-edit-protected Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Wales article about Jimmy Wales], even though it was the [http://news.google.com/archivesearch?q=%22Rachel+Marsden%22+Wales&btnG=Search&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8 talk of mainstream media] for the better part of March 2008. Compare, there is [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Gibson_DUI_incident an entire article] about Mel Gibson's DUI incident; an article which any anonymous IP address can edit and malign. Not so, Jimmy Wales' article. He merits special protective editorial favors, it would appear.

==Misspending Foundation funds==
In March 2008, Wales was accused by former Wikimedia Foundation employee Danny Wool of subsidizing personal expenditures with foundation funds. These included rebuffed attempts to have reimbursed a $1200 dinner for four, a $650 wine tab, and even a visit to a Moscow massage parlor that Wales submitted ''twice'' for payback from the Foundation. Wool also stated that Wales had his Wikimedia credit card taken away in part because of his spending habits, though Wales denied this claim.<ref>[http://smh.com.au/news/biztech/wikipedia-head-accused-of-expenses-rort/2008/03/05/1204402516874.html Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales accused of expenses rort], Asher Moses, March 5, 2008, ''[[Sydney Morning Herald]]''</ref> Foundation Chair Florence Devouard and former foundation interim Executive Director Brad Patrick denied any wrongdoing by Wales or the foundation, saying that Wales accounted for every expense and that for items he did not have receipts for, he paid out of his own pocket.<ref>[http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/05/BUVFVDM3H.DTL San Francisco Chronicle]</ref> Executive Director Sue Gardner would later defend Wales on CNET video, saying, "Jimmy has never done anything wrong."<ref>[http://news.cnet.com/1606-2-6233396.html CNET video of an extremely uncomfortable Sue Gardner]</ref>

==Jeffrey Merkey favors-for-payment allegations==
[[Image:Jimmy Wales on Washington Post interview.jpg|right|thumb|200px|Napping on the job.]]Later in March 2008, it was alleged by [[Jeff V. Merkey|Jeffrey Vernon Merkey]] that Wales had edited Merkey's entry in Wikipedia to make it more "favourable" in return for donations to the Wikimedia Foundation. In May 2006 Wales had erased Merkey's article "because of the unpleasantness of it" and stated "we are nearing a resolution of this longstanding conflict," referring to a dispute between the Wikipedia community and Merkey over the content of the biography. Wales called the allegation that the Wikimedia Foundation had received donations in exchange for this "nonsense."<ref>[http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/cashforkindness-scandal-rattles-wikipedia/2008/03/11/1205125911471.html Cash for kindness]</ref> <ref name="bbcpaidediting">{{citeweb|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7291382.stm|title=Wiki boss 'edited for donation'|accessdate=2008-03-12}}</ref> Nonetheless, Merkey made a very clear and very deliberate statement to the Associated Press that attested:
''Wales agreed that in exchange for a substantial donation and other financial support of the Wikimedia Foundation projects, Wales would use his influence to make Merkey's article adhere to Wikipedia's stated policies with regard to internet libel "as a courtesty" and place Merkey under his "special protection" as an editor.''<ref>[http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2008-March/039545.html [Foundation-l] Statement to the Associated Press], Jeffrey Merkey, March 9, 2008.</ref>

==Tolerance of plagiarism==
The original version of any wiki-formatted article about the Arch Coal company was authored in September 2006 by [[Directory:Gregory J. Kohs|Gregory Kohs]] and released under the terms of the GFDL on this website, [[Directory:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz.com]]. It was then scraped by an independent editor into Wikipedia. In October 2006, erroneously thinking that the article was paid for by Arch Coal, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales acted to delete the article from Wikipedia, but the Wikipedia community determined that Wales' action had been unjustified. The article was revised, largely by "User:JzG" (Guy Chapman), who would [http://wikipediareview.com/index.php?showtopic=15321 later claim] that he wrote his version of the article ''ab initio'', "from the ground up". However, in January 2008, Kohs demonstrated to Chapman that the article as modified by User:JzG actually plagiarized many aspects of the original. Faced with that evidence, Chapman elected to cover up his misdeed by [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=Arch_Coal deleting the original edits] on the Wikipedia site, thus making the provenance of the article appear to have come from Chapman, and not from MyWikiBiz. When Jimmy Wales was notified about this violation of professional ethics and proper GFDL attribution of the edit history, Wales '''very reluctantly''' restored the original edit history, with the childish edit summary, "''might as well restore all of it I suppose''".

===Additional comment===
When in December 2008, Kohs [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Arch_Coal&diff=255480884&oldid=255154863 sought to improve] the article about Arch Coal on Wikipedia, his improvements were [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Arch_Coal&diff=next&oldid=255480884 reverted back] by a mindless administrator from Belgium. This underscores the true system of editorial control on Wikipedia -- it matters not the '''content''' of one's edits, but rather '''who''' authors the content. (Which, of course, directly contradicts Wikipedia's supposed credo that "anyone can edit".)

===Jimbo (finally) sees the light===
After about 26 months, Wales did ultimately [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AArch_Coal&diff=258731121&oldid=224255965 apologize clearly and firmly] for his mistakes in handling this situation. Bravo!
==Openserving==
In December 2006, Jimmy Wales launched a spin-off from Wikia called [http://openserving.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page Openserving]. Wales was attempting to copy another business model that had been floated by [[Centiare|Centiare.com]] (which is currently regenerated at [[Directory:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]]), and by Helium.com, where the unpaid labor who create new content would have the opportunity to earn advertising revenue as a reward for their authorship. Although Wales claimed that "thousands" of interested queries were made of Openserving, the project never got a single new forum off the ground. It was a failure.

Wikia.com is perhaps Wales' most successful project financially, although it has been speculated that it won't be able to turn a regular profit, as meager ad revenues can't possibly support the staffing needs.

==Spanking Art Wikia==
[[Image:Spanking Art Wikia ad for March of Dimes.jpg|left|thumb|230px|Centextual ads supported spanking]]Jimmy Wales' privately-held Wikia company as recently as January 2008 hosted online a web menagerie of freely-licensed images of innocent children juxtaposed with depraved images of children being mercilessly spanked until purple, along with photos of various sexual-enhancement toys. A critic of the site led an urgent campaign that challenged this '''[http://web.archive.org/web/20071214201347rn_1/spankingart.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page Spanking Art Wikia]''' wiki. Wales became quite ruffled under the collar, irritated that the agitator had not "made a complaint through the proper channels". Imagine, sexually-charged images of deviant abuse against children, and the man hosting it on his company's servers was more upset that the complaints against his site weren't filed properly.

==Wikia Search==
Jimbo's venture into the search engine market was much-ballyhooed by the tech media, but after only an 18-month effort, Wales pulled the plug on the failure that was Wikia Search. Evidence was clear early on that it would [http://andrewkeen.typepad.com/the_great_seduction/2008/10/the.html not be a success]. But even as late as March 2009, Wales [http://www.imediaconnection.com/content/22475.asp deceived reporter Susan Kuchinskas] with the assurance, "''I have my team focused on the front end, working on the user experience, and making sure we have all the wiki-like tools people need to work on the site. We're just cranking away.''" Merely days later, Wales would face reality, fire the people he'd employed to try to make this pig fly, and shut down the site.

: Down for me, too, Jon. Probably a crack team of IP-disrupting cabalists. ;-) Either that, or, did you notice that the Libyan convicted for Lockerbie may be released? Didn't Slim Virgin have something to do with his incarceration? Seriously, isn't there some connection? --[[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 09:18, 30 June 2007 (PDT)
JA: I can still get the lo-rider model — http://wikipediareview.com/lofiversion/ — read only, but there have been no changes in that since the which-end hour. [[User:Jon Awbrey|Jon Awbrey]] 09:58, 30 June 2007 (PDT)
:I guess we could always ''say'' the two things are related, ''somehow''... I mean, they might as well be. Anyway, I've just sent an e-mail to the folks at LunarPages, in hopes they can fix the cached skin file in question without our necessarily having to wait for Selina to do it. I'll let you know if they refuse... In the meantime, I'm still feeling terrible about the whole thing, but just think, a year from now we'll all look back on this incident and feel slightly less terrible! ::Remember when AOL went to unlimited minutes for flat fee? The customers swamped the servers so bad, the outages led to front-page news. AOL's stock shot UP at that time, because analysts quickly (and correctly) saw that if AOL access led to front-page news, this Internet thing must be REALLY IMPORTANT to consumers. Of course, AOL sat on their laurels for too many years, and now they are a mere shell of their former self. But, anyway, the analogy may be for us Wikipedia Reviewers... what did we do these past few days, WITHOUT our favorite message board? --[[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 21:48, 1 July 2007 (PDT)
==Google is not finding us==
Something happened, I don't know what, it could be switching to the new metawiki platform, maybe something else but google is definitely not caching any of our new pages correctly. My only new client in a while is getting screwed because his page isn't being found. [http://72.14.209.104/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.centiare.com%2FDirectory%3ALaw_Firm_of_James_Novak&btnG=Google+Search This link] pulls up the cached version of his page and gives an error message that was never on centiare before. "failed to derive URL prefix for timeline API codes" I think this message might be key to finding the culprit. Helping people create exposure is the only reason centiare really exists and right now it isn't doing that very well, at all. My fledgling business is at stake. What should we do? [[User:Garrett|Garrett]] 10:16, 1 July 2007 (PDT)
:I've noticed similar goings on, too, Garrett. Karl is away for a vacation this week, but I think he's back around July 9th. Let's question him then. Personally, I think something is going on with the server -- very slow for the past 10 days, and that would coincide with the 23,000 pages that Karl added with RSS feeds. Could be bogging things down so much that the Google bots are giving up after "time outs". --[[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 21:24, 1 July 2007 (PDT)
::Thanks for getting back with me. I assumed Karl was on vacation or something similar. My business has been in the toilet and the law firm of James Novak is pissed they no where to be found on google. I'm sure it will all get worked out after he gets back. But for now I'll just enjoy my endless summer sans work. Luckily centiare and working with Lande on wikipedia has netted me near the same as a crappy minimum wage job except a 4 hour work week instead of thirty :) [[User:Garrett|Garrett]] 08:29, 7 July 2007 (PDT)
==How To Create New Semantic Tags?==

JA: I forgot how to make new semantic tags. I need to make one called "Poem Of" for a page that has a single poem and one called "Poetry Of" for a page that has a small collection of poems. Or maybe I just asked Karl last time? [[User:Jon Awbrey|Jon Awbrey]] 11:18, 7 July 2007 (PDT)

: You can make 'em just like any of the other ones were made -- by creating the text label in a page, then filling out the linked-to page from the RDF table at the bottom of the page. The only thing is that Karl is asking people to "go through him" first, so that he/we can advise on better solutions that may already be in place. Let me make a general apology for being so out of the loop for the past week ... and unfortunately, it's going to continue for a couple of weeks. Jon, you ARE our Centiare Prize winner, though, so we'll be passing the cup here and getting a check to you before the end of the month. --[[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 19:58, 8 July 2007 (PDT)

JA: Yeah, I went ahead and followed the paradigm that I saw for ''Paper Name'', ''Paper Of'', etc., but I can't figure out why the ''[[Attribute:Poetry Name]]'' that I created still reports 0 items under it. Did I do something wrong, or does it take the database that long to refresh? [[User:Jon Awbrey|Jon Awbrey]] 20:56, 8 July 2007 (PDT)
: Jon, it's showing up as a Relation, not an Attribute. I hope that helps. I'm not going to have time to troubleshoot this any more this week. --[[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 22:09, 8 July 2007 (PDT)

JA: It's okay now. It seems to have gotten picked up on my last edit of the page being tagged. It may have had to do with the order in which I created content pages and attribute-relation pages. Gracias, [[User:Jon Awbrey|Jon Awbrey]] 08:08, 9 July 2007 (PDT)
As far as I know, the Wikipediots who patched in "nofollow" did literally that -- they patched on "nofollow" into the original Mediawiki code. We're working with the more original form of Mediawiki (the way it was meant to be, cooperating with our web brethren to augment page rank), plus the Semantic Mediawiki extension on top of that, for all your "Attribute/Category/Relation" fun. --[[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 16:01, 9 August 2007 (PDT)
==How To Make Outlines In Wiki or HTML==

:Jon, it makes me laugh that you (master of math symbols and such) would be asking me this! I don't know of any "outliner" format tool for Mediawiki. In fact, my understanding is that Wikipediots just do it this way:
: Yes and no, Jon. We're going to see what we can do on our lonesome to (first) back up the site, then (second) change templates and logo and footers, all without harming any of the content on site currently. I presume that there's a certain small chance that we really muck up things (a la Somey) and we lose the site's post-December 9th content, and have to restore the backed-up version. That's the risk we're all taking until our crack squad of wiki-tinkerers is comfortable running the site. I really don't know -- other than to just switch off TOC and hard-code a linky-dinked custom table, but that sure would be a lot of effort. Sorry, but this may be one of those "it's just the way Mediawiki is, live with it".
Hello. Joined after discussing with Greg at WR. As you see from my user page I'm still struggling with the 'ask' queries. Well, not struggling much but my main interest is building an academic resource which would allow searching for philosophers (or any other historical figure) by the period they were flourishing in. My struggle is with the ISO date format which is of course a string, but all date searches involve ordering of some sort, so how do you convert date strings into orderable units? Well I can see the ISO format used can be sorted, but then for medieval philosophers the best we usually have is year of birth. So to I create a pretend date format 1265-00-00 which is orderable, or just 1265 (which it seems to understand). Any help appreciated. [[User:Ockham|Ockham]] 05:21, 28 January 2008 (PST)
: Update: got it to work. Joy [[User:Ockham|Ockham]] 05:33, 28 January 2008 (PST)

[UPDATE] Yes I think this is going to be v exciting. The idea of using rankings for biographical subjects (so that one can compare relative rankings of topics in standard reference sources for notability and also, with probably amusing results, comparing with the Wikipedia ranking, e.g. by in k, or in equivalent pages of A4) is powerful. No one has ever done this.

However I am having some trouble getting the attribute thing to work. I have defined the attribute correctly I think, here [[Attribute:Ccmp Pages]]. One page, namely [[Thomas Aquinas]] has the attribute embedded as <nowiki> | ccmp_pages = [[Ccmp Pages:= 17]] </nowiki>, but the system doesn't seem to recognise it. If someone could show me how to do this I could beef up the help pages a little. [[User:Ockham|Ockham]] 08:16, 28 January 2008 (PST)

:We never were able to figure out why, but it seemed to us that Attributes sometimes take a few minutes, or even a few hours for the actual Semantic Mediawiki to "realize" that they've been applied here or there. It might have something to do with the user's own web cache, too. I am seeing that [[Thomas Aquinas]] is now showing his Ccmp Pages to the world. Hopefully, you're successfully seeing the same thing now, too. - [[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 08:29, 28 January 2008 (PST)

:: That wasn't the problem. The problem was the information template didn't work, so had to add a subsetion of the article on 'notability'. It really would be very amusing to compare Wikipedia and the Cambridge Companion, and perhaps the Oxford Companion using these scores. I've got a week or to spare before starting any serious paid employment so will update all 13th century philosophers and could provide a nice little showcase for MWB is you are interested. [[User:Ockham|Ockham]] 08:34, 28 January 2008 (PST)

Welcome, Ockham! If the Ccmp Pages are going to be used for rank sorting, I would recommend defining a set number of digits and preceding lower values with zeroes so that 004 would sort lower than 017. --[[User:OmniMediaGroup|OmniMediaGroup]] 08:41, 28 January 2008 (PST)

: Thanks. Although it ''does'' appear to sort when you query ''only'' those philosophers who have ccmp (i.e. use the + option) Since every philosopher will by definition have a rating (0 if they are not mentioned at all) probably doesn't make sense to use set number of digits (unless you recommend otherwise). [[User:Ockham|Ockham]] 08:59, 28 January 2008 (PST)
:: [update] yes, once I populate all the ccmp values it updates correctly. Obviously having null values makes it default to string sort or something like that. [[User:Ockham|Ockham]] 09:06, 28 January 2008 (PST)

:I sent the note via PM to DL on WR. I'm happy, too, that Wikia came to their senses, despite Jimbo trying to frame this as (yet another) "trolling" attack from me towards him personally. I'm saddened that it appears the site will just be regenerated on some other, less-notable website. You ever notice that Larry Sanger left Jimbo? Brad Patrick left Jimbo? Florence has shown her distaste for Jimbo. I wonder how much longer Gil Penchina and Angela Beesley will be able to tolerate him. - [[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 05:15, 2 February 2008 (PST)

:: Thanks. : )
::
::
:: [http://www.wikia.com/index.php?title=Forum:Spanking_art_wiki&diff=127841&oldid=127810 Oh, I see]. Damn, hosting database dumps means that awful material is still publicly accessible... and probably will get moved somewhere.
::
:: I don't think this is about Jimbo personally unless he wants it to be, really. It seems odd to me that he gets so upset over things like this. In customer service, particularly rude customers are often passed up to management. Basically, the longer someone has been working, and, more importantly, the more the person is paid, the more of that unpleasant stuff the person is expected to be able to handle. Which makes sense - getting paid really does make that sort of thing easier to put up with. On the other hand, if I go to a restaurant and pay good money so I can hear the manager complain about me to other customers, just because I'm upset that they raised their prices and then gave me half the serving size they gave when I first went there, I'm not leaving a tip or going back there again. (I'm sure you know all this, but I'm explaining my reasoning.)
:: So, as a stock-holding member of Wikia, Jimbo is paid quite well, whereas most of the people around him are not. I guess having power as an administrator, with the favours that go with, counts as some sort of payment, more than the standard editor at least, certainly more than banned users, who are not only unpaid but punished, but it's still not the same as actual money. So, as someone paid so well, he should really be taking the responsibility for dealing with angry people - often very justifiably angry people, it should be noted - off of people who aren't paid, and even those who are paid less, for that matter. However, if he can't even deal with the ones who come to him directly, I doubt many others will be comfortable bringing their problems to him.
:: After thinking about it, I don't think pornography is GFDL-compatible. See [http://wikipediareview.com/blog/20080130/wikias-spanking-fetish-site-and-the-use-of-photographs-of-children/#comment-1575 WR blog comment].
What are these Directory:WikBacks? --[[User:OmniMediaGroup|OmniMediaGroup]] 14:29, 17 April 2008 (PDT)
:WikBack.com is a message board set up by the Wikipedia ArbCom member Uninvited Company. There was a folder over there called Cage Match, where I skewered Durova and JzG. UC decided that his message board was too cluttered with folders, so he arbitrarily deleted these discussions. I found them again via Google Cache, so I wanted to preserve them here. I've since been forwarded the discussions from another user who got them as e-mail feeds, so I could delete them from here, if you're concerned about server space? Or, were you just curious? -- [[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 05:16, 18 April 2008 (PDT)
==SEO==
Hey Greg, are there any SEO techniques I can place on my page or is there anything else I can do to get my page to show up on the 1st page in google search instead of the 2nd page? Would adding meta tags help? Please advise! Thanks! --[[User:Followfocus|Followfocus]]
:We're learning the ins and outs of SEO just like the rest of the world, with some success at times, and at other times complete confusion. I do have some tips that I am 90% sure will help you; I just can't quantify how much they will help you.
:First, convert more of the words in your Directory listing to wikilinks. For example, instead of "Texas", make it "<nowiki>[[Directory:Texas|Texas]]</nowiki>". I would convert perhaps 10 words to wikilinks, and better yet, if they are words that you want to be sensitized to engine searches, make sure you wikilink to those words -- and create a MyWikiBiz article for any that aren't yet in existence. For example, we need to have some Main Space pages about [[landscape]] and [[architecture]]. You could write those and benefit MyWikiBiz, but by wikilinking the words in your own Directory, you'd benefit, too.
:Second, create more semantic attributes in your Directory. See the bottom of your page? You have 8 attributes identified. Go for 20, and it will probably help. A listing of available Attributes is [http://www.mywikibiz.com/index.php?title=Special:Attributes&limit=500&offset=0 found here]. You might benefit from the following Attributes: NAICS_Code1, Zip, Keyword (which you can do many iterations), and maybe Client_Description.
:Best of luck with these, and be sure to give it time. It can take two weeks for Google and Yahoo and MSN to crawl and recognize these improvements. -- [[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 11:00, 8 May 2008 (PDT)

Hey Greg,
thanks for the response. It will help immensely. I am confused on a few things: 1st how do I get a NAICS COde? I'm not even sure how that works. As far as attributes go, I will work on architecture and landscape main pages, but where do they fall? Personal? Hmm.... As far as attributes go, I will work on that. Thanks for all the help and I will keep this going..

--[[User:Followfocus|Followfocus]]

:Your [http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics02/def/ND541922.HTM most likely NAICS code] is probably 541922, or perhaps 711510. You don't "get" a NAICS code, you just decide which one (or ones) you feel best identify your line of work. They're the successor to the old "SIC" codes, which are still widely used by business and marketing directories. On our old Centiare.com site, I decided that we might do well to take only the first 5 digits of the 6-digit NAICS code into account, since it would open up more possibilities for matching searches, but now, I'm not so convinced many of our users are even employing this identifier, so I'm not bossing anyone on how to use them.
:As for the architecture and landscape pages, they don't need to be in "protected" space at all, because they are not legal entities. Just click the red links above and you can get started creating those pages right away! -- [[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 18:19, 13 May 2008 (PDT)
== Quick Question ==

Is it possible to allow a second user editing rights on a directory article?
cb86 20:28, 23 June 2008 (PDT)
:There probably is, but we don't have the Mediawiki know-how to implement it at this time. So, what we (unfortunately) recommend is that you share a password, or create a copy of the page in the page's "Talk" tab, allowing joint open editing between the master and slave accounts, then the master can determine when to copy the "Talk" version back onto the Directory page. I hope that this is helpful enough. - [[User:MyWikiBiz|MyWikiBiz]] 20:35, 23 June 2008 (PDT)
The '''Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.''' is the parent organization of the [[Directory:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]], [[Wiktionary]], [[Wikiquote]], [[Wikibooks]] (including [[Wikijunior]]), [[Wikisource]], [[Wikimedia Commons]], [[Wikispecies]], [[Wikinews]], [[Wikiversity]], and [[Meta-Wiki]] collaborative projects. It is a [[Non-Profit Organization|not-for-profit corporation]] based in [[St. Petersburg]], [[Florida]], [[United States|USA]], and organized under the laws of the state of. Its existence was officially announced by Wikipedia co-founder [[Directory:Jimmy Wales|Jimmy Wales]], who was hitherto running Wikipedia within his company [[Directory:Bomis|Bomis]], on [[June_20|June 20]], [[2003]]. Its approval by the U.S. [[Directory:Internal Revenue Service|Internal Revenue Service]], by letter in April 2005, as an educational foundation in the category "Adult, Continuing Education" means all contributions to the Wikimedia Foundation are [[Tax deduction|tax deductible]] for U.S. federal income tax purposes.

==Foundation goals==
The goal of the Wikimedia [[Foundation (charity)|foundation]] is to develop and maintain [[open content]], [[wiki]]-based projects and to provide the full contents of those projects to the public [[gratis|free of charge]].

In addition to the multilingual general [[encyclopedia]] ''Wikipedia'', the Foundation manages a multi-language [[dictionary]] and [[thesaurus]] named ''[[Wiktionary]]'', an encyclopedia of [[quotation]]s named ''[[Wikiquote]]'', a repository of source texts in any language named ''[[Wikisource]]'', and a collection of [[e-book]] texts for students (such as [[textbook]]s and annotated [[public domain]] books) named ''[[Wikibooks]]''. ''[[Wikijunior]]'' is a subproject of Wikibooks that specializes in books for children.

The continued growth of each of the Wikimedia projects is dependent mostly on [http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Fundraising donations] but the Wikimedia Foundation tries to increase its revenue by finding alternative means of funding such as [[federal grant|grant]]s and sponsorship.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a [[501(c)(3)]] with a vision to bring a free and accurate encyclopedia to every single person on the planet. This includes people who currently do not have electricity, computers, Internet access, or even clean drinking water. All proceeds from donations, as with all proceeds from all Foundation fundraisers, are fully dedicated to that charitable purpose.

==Foundation history and growth==
The name "Wikimedia" was [[neologism|coined]] by [[Sheldon Rampton]] in a post to the English Wikipedia's mailing list in March 2003.<ref>[http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2003-March/001887.html Wikipedia English mailing list message], March 2003.</ref> The name has been criticized for its similarity to the name of [[Wikipedia]] and the software it runs on, [[MediaWiki]]; this sometimes leads to confusion among people new to the project.

With the Foundation's announcement, Wales also transferred ownership of all Wikipedia, Wiktionary and [[Nupedia]] [[domain name]]s to Wikimedia along with the copyrights for all materials related to these projects that were created by [[Bomis]] employees or Wales himself. The computer equipment used to run all the Wikimedia projects was also donated by Wales to the Foundation. The domain names [http://wikimedia.org/ wikimedia.org] and [http://wikimediafoundation.org/ wikimediafoundation.org] were secured for the Foundation by Wikipedia contributor Daniel Mayer. Wikimedia's [[bandwidth]] and power are covered by donations to the project from various companies and individuals.

In January 2004, Jimmy Wales appointed his business partners [[Tim Shell]] and Michael Davis to the Board of the Wikimedia Foundation. In June 2004, an election was held for two user representative Board members. Following one month of campaigning and two weeks of online voting, [[Angela Beesley]] and [[Florence Nibart-Devouard]] were elected to join the board; they were re-elected in July 2005. Wales and Beesley later launched a startup company, [[Wikia]], which is affiliated with neither Wikimedia nor Bomis, though it donates to Wikimedia.

Later, other official positions were developed: Tim Starling was appointed Developer Liaison to help improve the organisation of the development of the [[MediaWiki]] software, and Daniel Mayer was appointed Chief Financial Officer to help keep a budget and coordinate fund drives. Erik Möller had been the Chief Research Officer, but resigned in August 2005 due to differences with the board.<ref>[http://mail.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2005-August/003916.html Wikimedia Foundation mailing list message], August 2005.</ref> James Forrester was subsequently appointed to the position.
{{wikinewscat|Brad Patrick}}
On [[June 16]], [[2006]], Brad Patrick, theretofore a practicing [[attorney]] engaged in [[pro bono]] work with the Foundation, was named as [[general counsel]] and interim [[chief executive officer|executive director]]; in the latter capacity, Patrick was designated to assist the Board in its search for a permanent executive director<ref>[http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Press_releases/Wikimedia_Foundation_Announces_Interim_Executive_Director Wikimedia Foundation press release]</ref>.

Patrick has since resigned.

{{wikinewscat|Angela Beesley}}
On [[July 1]], [[2006]], Angela Beesley resigned from the board effective upon election of her successor, expressing concern about "certain events and tendencies that have arisen within the organisation since the start of this year," but stating her intent to continue to participate in the Wikimedia projects, and in the formation of an Australian chapter.<ref>[http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2006-July/008146.html Wikimedia Foundation mailing list message], July 2006</ref> After her resignation, a special election was held and the winner, Erik Möller, will finish Angela Beesley's term, ending with the ordinary 2007 election.<ref>[http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2006-September/010307.html Wikimedia Foundation mailing list message]</ref>
